I am touched and inspired by the Andrew Solomon TedMed talk that Louise at Dare Boldly shared over here.
Although Andrew has done research into different population groups, I think his message is a powerful reminder for every one of us. This is my interpretation as a loving kindness meditation.
I want to engage in the life I am living
I don’t want to be fixed, changed or to be something completely different
My soul knows that I yearn to be accepted and loved … just the way I am.
~~~
You want to engage in the life you are living
You don’t want to be fixed, changed or to be something completely different
Your soul knows that you yearn to be accepted and loved … just the way you are
It is our differences that unite us.
~~~
Let all people engage in the life they are living
No one wants to be fixed, changed or to be something completely different
Our souls know that we yearn to be accepted and loved … just the way we are
Let our differences unite us
Let us all engage in the life we are living

Beautiful words and so very true Val. This is a good reminder to me to accept people for who they are. I’ve been thinking in the last little while that there is so much out there about being the best you can be, yet my best could look completely different than your best. Perhaps there is no utopia of how to be or what rung on the ladder needs to be reached so know you’ve made it. All our gifts, ways of thinking are needed. Sorry I’m kind of rambling… 🙂

Lovely loving thoughts Diana! Accept people for who they are rather than using our own filter about how they should be. As a coach I see so many colleagues trying to “fix” others. They see the problems, apply labels … but often forget about the humanity. Bringing out the best in the person in their own way is what I always hope to do.

Yes, society has a different idea, so our choice to be ok just as we are must go through many layers of one-upmanship, professional-competitiveness, be-the-bestiveness, and push-harderness. It was ingrained in me from the time I was born. I see it in our schools, and it makes me sad for our children because I know how it made me feel to always compare myself.

Very beautiful, Val. A mantra I sometimes recite:
I bless you, I release you, I set you free.
I allow you to be you and me to be me.

Dud you write that mantra? It is very good.

I watched the video when Louise posted it and it made me cry (when he brought up some instances of non-acceptance). It truly was an excellent video about the difference between love and acceptance and how important it is to have both.
