Messages that are simple yet profound, let me pause and connect me to my Middle Ground. These words from Joseph Campbell call out for some self reflection:

“If you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your path. Your own path you make with every step you take.                              That’s why it’s your path.”

” If the path you are on is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.”

one step at a time

The ego seeks clarity and reassurance, so it will cling to what is known.

But the “tried and true” may not be for you.

Our true path is much more likely to take us into the unknown.

Be ready to step out …

trust …

breathe fully …

take one step at a time …

and let your true path unfold

🙂

  1. I think there is a difference between a vision (purpose) of WHERE we want to go and HOW we get there (the path to take). I think we need to keep sight of the end point (the vision) yet bear in mind the actual journey to get there may not go as we had planned. We may have obstacles to climb over or unexpected detours. AT those times we may need to take time out to re-set the compass, or we may need to choose a challenging path, but always we need to keep the vision in mind.
Thanks for this post. It did make me think and I agree with your thoughts on it.

    • Elizabeth I like your perspective. Our vision is key as long as it comes from our heart and soul. Being open to re-set the compass or look for an alternative is practical and wise my friend!

  2. “Our true path is much more likely to take us into the unknown.” I believe this implicitly Val. It’s Robert Frost’s Road less traveled. There are certain people who do much to set you on your path. Joseph Campbell, for me, has been one of those key people. An outstanding guide and mentor. Great post – thank you.

  3. Oh I love this post, I just adore it Val! I believe this to be true. Although it’s good to plan and strategize, I think we often limit our own potential with our own narrow-mindedness. If you must plan, then plan, but stay open and flexible and expect magic!
I love this post, did I already say that? ❤

    • Thank you Diana! I agree that when we are inspired by a vision it is something to aim towards … but being open along the way is absolutely key. When we feel stuck and unclear … its a good reminder to connect with our heart and soul, rather than wish the path to be clearer so we feel more in control!

  4. Yes! Well said, Val. I do think that our path is shrouded in mist . . . at times, anyway.

    • I hear you Nancy. Remember Brigadoon? … We can see our vision in our minds eye, but sometimes we can’t find it in the mist.

  5. Maybe this is exactly what Byron meant when he wrote about ‘pleasure in the pathless woods.’

  6. Val, I could cry, what a great post, and it really spoke to me today! I fight my fear of the unknown, and this is a great way to look at it – it’s not unknown, it’s the fact that I’m building my path as I walk. I’m creating my own journey.
