Transitions in life,
Journeys home or outward change
Time to breathe and pause
~

I flew back from Scotland last week and have settled into life here in the US once more. It wasn’t an easy transition for my body, and I became impatient with the jet lag, and annoyed with the need to keep eating to stay awake!

It made me consider the other transitions and changes that take place in life. Some are small and others are life changing. Some we choose and work towards, others come out of the blue and it can feel like the rug has been pulled out from underneath our feet.

Yet, no matter whether we choose to change, or change happens by itself, there is a period of feeling off center and in between one place and the other – neither there nor here.

This is a time to slow down and pause.

Rather than wishing ourselves ahead of where we are, his is a time to breathe and recognize what is happening. This place of “no mans land” is naturally uncomfortable. Our mind wants something different and we may become frustrated or anxious.

A few deep and full breaths can soothe the body and calm the mind.

Remember, everything happens in the present. From a place of presence and acceptance, the future will unfold in its own way.

The world will continue to turn. The sun will continue to rise and fall, and the birds will bring in the dawn.

Everything changes
Accept it all and give thanks

Val, what a wonderful, honest, and timely post. I feel what you have described here as I prepare to move from my current home to another one. I’m reminded nearly every day that breathing and pausing, returning to center (true home) is what brings clarity about what the next steps are. Thank you for offering this gift this morning. 🙏🏻💜

When I know my mind as a partner, not the ruler of my body, I find myself grounded in that middle ground of which you speak. We are, as I’ve noticed often, aligned.

    Thank you Val.

Jet lag is hard on the body, for sure. Hope your stay was a good one!

Having just gone through jet lag this week Val, I too have learned to be still and patient as it moves through in its own time. A beautiful reminder for us all. 🧡🙏🏻

Thanks for this piece, it puts into words that sense of displacement I’ve experienced going from one side of the world to the other. No choice but to find your middle ground

You seem to be describing the Buddhist concept of bardo. It generally means the time between death and rebirth, but I tend to look at it as the time of any transition. I just read something today that kind of goes along with your wonderful post, “Every time we’re up against a wall, we’re also standing at a threshold.” It is a good time to pause.

    Val,

I feel that I’ve been living in a state of transition since 2019 when I first chose to leave my job. Refocusing on being present is helpful and also so very challenging at times for me.
I am holding these words close. Thank you for sharing them.
