When the rhythm of the heart becomes hectic,
Time takes on the strain until it breaks;
Then all the unattended stress falls in
On the mind like an endless, increasing weight.

The light in the mind becomes dim.
Things you could take in your stride before
Now become laborsome events of will.

Weariness invades your spirit.
Gravity begins falling inside you,
Dragging down every bone.

The tide you never valued has gone out.
And you are marooned on unsure ground.
Something within you has closed down;
And you cannot push yourself back to life.

You have been forced to enter empty time.
The desire that drove you has relinquished.
There is nothing else to do now but rest
And patiently learn to receive the self
You have forsaken for the race of days.

At first your thinking will darken
And sadness take over like listless weather.
The flow of unwept tears will frighten you.

You have traveled too fast over false ground;
Now your soul has come to take you back.

Take refuge in your senses, open up
To all the small miracles you rushed through.

Become inclined to watch the way of rain
When it falls slow and free.

Imitate the habit of twilight,
Taking time to open the well of color
That fostered the brightness of day.

Draw alongside the silence of stone
Until its calmness can claim you.
Be excessively gentle with yourself.

Stay clear of those vexed in spirit.
Learn to linger around someone of ease
Who feels they have all the time in the world.

Gradually, you will return to yourself,
Having learned a new respect for your heart
And the joy that dwells far within slow time.

~ John O’Donohue, from “Blessings”

Sometimes it feels that we have travelled so far away from ourselves. Crises and challenges abound these days, and its all too easy to rush on and past the things that truly matter. John O’Donohue’s words take us on that journey to replenish, connect and fill our souls anew.

May today be a day for slowing down and noticing the small miracles we rushed through.

Take time to pause and let nature and awareness restore mind, body and spirit.

Namaste

    Sounds like aging to me… 😉 the rushing around of our younger years, replaced with a calmer, less hurried way of life. 🙏🏼💜

      Thank you Sue. I am appreciating more and more the need to step away, centre myself and find my middle ground. Without it,these days are too disturbing to the ego mind and our drive for safety. Keep connecting to your heart and soul and share your light with those around you 💐🙏🏻💞.

    Yes Val, those rushing days cover so much, but miss things that need digesting. And those days are usually so we don’t think too much, covering the many losses this world brings. But as you said, a time of rest will arrive because we can’t keep going at that rate. It needs to be held, absorbing what matters and releasing the rest. Then that middle ground of balance so beautifully found, reminding us who we really are in that destination. Great post kind lady, may that rest be that middle ground you seek 🤗❤️🙏

    Life in slow time . . . priceless!

    In the moment, even peeling a carrot creates a joyful abundance of vibrant beauty.

    John O’Donohue wrote a lot about the silence of stones, and I’ve always found it so calming. He was onto something there. A beautiful share, Val. ❤

    I have loved John O’Donohue’s poetry for many years and several of his books. I’m not much of a poetry fan but I love his. Guess I’ve not had proper exposure nor understanding of it. This does ring true. It’s so easy to get lost in things and harder to find our way back to center. But find our way, we must. Have a wonderful week. BTW, the changes WP has made required me to hunt down your posts. I’m going to have to figure out why.

    I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts on slowing down. In the hustle of daily life, we often forget to appreciate the small miracles surrounding us. O’Donohue’s message resonates deeply; it’s a timely reminder that we need to nurture our spirits and reconnect with ourselves amidst the chaos. Today, I will make a conscious effort to pause and soak in the beauty of the world around me. Thank you for sharing such inspiring words.

    Namaste.
