Permission to be Free

A slow and steady flow of breath
focuses awareness. As inner
concentration grows, a hidden
landscape flows into view.
Sensations, emotions, thoughts,
and what lies beyond all these -
the source of light and energy -
comes clear. Steadiness and ease
are key and so is permission to be
free of rules and old beliefs.
It takes years of discipline to know
what rules to break, what ritual
to upend next, and when simply
sitting with a quiet breath
is the best step to take.

Enjoy this inspiring poem from Danna Faulds, shared on a Monday Gentle Empowering Yoga class.

I smiled when I read “It takes year of discipline to know what rules to break”. So true, wisdom arises from the practice of being present. Eventually we see through the controls put upon us and the ego driven rules.

When we focus inwards and guide our breath, we move energy and discover clarity. There is an inner knowing that shines a light on what is true… and how we can be in the world.

As I read this again, I remember when I was young that many rules and “norms” didn’t make sense to me. It was the punishment that seemed so cruel, especially if you didn’t know what the rules were. People being unkind to others, and violence made me very upset. (I couldn’t watch Bambi or Dumbo, or even The Wizard of Oz. Grimm’s fairy tales gave me nightmares.) That sensitive soul was dampened down for many years.

Thank goodness the practice of Yoga gave me permission to connect to my inner guide and find compassion for myself and others.

Namaste

  1. You have given many the ability to breathe kind lady, that in its wisdom is a great love 🤗❤️

And yes, a sensitive soul find those adverse things quite painful. I found I had to give up fishing as it seemed such a cruel waste. And strange looks when I pick up a spider to move it outside instead of drowning it in poison…to us both 🤣❤️🙏

  2. people being unkind has always upset me too. Bambi and Dumbo were devastating. I would get so upset and my dad would try to soothe me by saying it’s just a movie, it’s not real. I still can’t watch anything where someone or an animal is being mistreated.
