Love and the Great Silence

There is nothing fair or lovely
about life, although sometimes
it is both. Life is simply
what it is - unapologetically
bold in its approach. It can
bowl me over with beauty
or leave me flattened
by grief, and doesn't even
blink at my reaction.

If I curse the gods or fate,
my life is bound by anger
and regret. If I let the sadness
dissolve me completely,
love is all that's left -
love and the great silence
underlying every breath.

~ Danna Faulds from "Breath of Joy"

This poem by Danna Faulds really resonated with me as I read it at the end of yoga today.

When we keep coming back to poetry and spiritual wisdoms, it can open up new understandings and insights along the path.

This one had me nodding in recognition…

Life certainly doesn’t feel fair, because it is simply unfolding in its own way. It can bowl me over with intense beauty and immense joy, and the next moment, pull the rug out from underneath me and bring anger and tears.

Holding on to resentment and anger brings suffering and disease.

Something deep inside me knows that Life isn’t about me at all.

And when the tears dry and the distress has passed, and I am worn out like an old wet rag, there is a stillness that holds me.

Memories come of me crying my eyes out as a child, and at the end, feeling empty and yet filled with a calm presence. I was drained of all anger, and what was left was clear. No matter what happens, there is love here.

Never forget. Love lives here.

  10. That great silence behind/beneath the breath offers solace without ceasing. It is always there for the asking . . . once we allow our thoughts to settle.

In the silent stillness, love lies waiting.

  11. A lovely reflection, Val. I was just chatting with a blogger about how much beauty there is all around us and that sometimes we need to jump off the merry-go-round, be present, and notice. Faulds poem and your thoughts reminded me of that. Life isn’t always fair or fun, but there’s love and beauty everywhere.

  13. Your yoga students are so lucky to have you – I think I’ve said that before. Anger and even sadness are wasted energy. Flowing into ‘what is’ – that’s the way to go. Thanks so much for sharing Faulds’ wise poem.

  16. Your words are inspiring, Val. There is such emotional tension in living life, and being able to release and express yourself helps with the release. I could agree with you more that spiritual pearls of wisdom and the act of creativity in all sorts of art can open up new understandings. Your opening photos hit me immediately in the sense that we can all be that ‘heart’ in the chainlink fence that is the fabric of life. I wish you a wonderful weekend.
