Nothing More to Give

Some of us breeze
through the birth canal,
easy as you please,
while for others,
it's a near-death
experience just
to get here.
But once we enter
this world, we're all
in the same
leaky boat.
We struggle to
stay afloat,
bailing, flailing,
learning to swim,
donning life jackets.
We try prayer or
existential despair,
but nothing changes
the basic insecurity
of life. It all boils
down to such a
simple truth:
we can commiserate
in our misery or offer
each other acceptance,
warmth and love.
We have nothing more
to give than this.

~ Danna Faulds from "Breath of Joy"

Acceptance, warmth and love is what we all long for.

When we are so focused on ourselves and our challenges, we lose perspective and fall back into our own ego’s trials and tribulations.

We resist what we “should” be doing. We resent others who we perceive as being happier than us. We reject what we don’t like, and judge others for being the way they are.

to be happy and can give one another…. When we get out of our own resistance.

  5. Beautifully penned, Danna! This poem touches the heart and soul. The metaphor of life as a ‘leaky boat’ is potent, portraying the struggle and uncertainty that are inherent parts of human existence. It’s a gentle reminder of our shared experience in this life and the importance of empathy, acceptance, and love in navigating the turbulent waters. Your words echo the common human experience, how despite our different paths, we’re all in the same boat, doing our best to stay afloat. This is a profound reflection that fosters a sense of unity and compassion. Thank you for sharing this thoughtful piece, which eloquently illustrates the essence of our shared humanity.
