Life is like riding a bike. If you want to live fully, there are three things you have to focus on.

(1) You have to steer. (2) You have to pedal (3) You have to keep your balance.

Maintaining the dynamic relationship between these three aspects are key to living life well.

  • It’s important to go in the direction you want, otherwise you find yourself going round in circles. Be alert for obstacles ahead. Are you ready to change direction as needed?

  • Watch your speed. Are you going too fast? Do you need to slow down?

  • And of course, you need to have a sense of when you are in balance, so you won’t take a tumble and hurt yourself.

We shift priorities as things come up, but its up to us to find the dynamic between the 3 elements that works for us.

We can’t be told how to do this, but we  figure it out as we go along.

How’s your ride going in the highs and lows of life?

Thanks to Tim Gallwey’s Inner Game series for the inspiration.

  5. I love this analogy. One more aspect. Sometimes you need to stop and pump up the tyres (look after ourselves).

  6. I suppose Val there are also all the falls we have in learning to ride a bike. 🙂 Marvellous post.

    1. Don, You’re so right. We can’t learn to ride our bike without falling and getting back up again. When we are older we forget about that! Nice additional thought. Thank you.

  7. This morning was spent trying to teach my daughter how to ride…and how we all fall down, we all get hurt and cry. Its in getting up that matters!

    1. Yes indeed. We have to fall down so we can learn this lesson…. and its okay 🙂

  8. We need to know where we’re going (steer), we need to work to get there (pedal), and we need balance to keep on the right track. When we lose focus (fall off), we need to learn from our mistakes and move forward.
I also like Elizabeth’s comment “Sometimes you need to stop and pump up the tyres (look after ourselves”).
I never thought of it that way, but life IS so much like riding a bike!
