moving with the tide

Let go of the ways you thought life
would unfold: the holding of plans
or dreams or expectations – Let it
all go. Save your strength to swim
with the tide. The choice to fight
what is here before you now will
only result in struggle, fear, and
desperate attempts to flee from
the very energy you long for. Let go.

Let it all go and flow with the grace
that washes through your days whether
you receive it gently or with all your
quills raised to defend against invaders.

Take this on faith: the mind may never
find the explanations that it seeks, but
you will move forward nonetheless.
Let go, and the wave’s crest will carry
you to unknown shores, beyond your
wildest dreams or destinations. Let it
all go and find the place of rest and
peace, and certain transformation.

Danna Faulds taken from Go in and In – Poems form the Heart of Yoga

In looking for an image to compliment these soulful flowing words, I came across several references to “only dead fish go with the flow” and many self improvement posters showing the colorful fish pushing against the flow of grey fishes….

In our culture we are conditioned from an early age to be an individual;  to stand out and above others;  pushing to succeed: strategizing to overcome and competing to win. We are also expected to be good consumers in order to achieve status and happiness. But is this truly the way to be happy and successful in life or is this the way to maintain a consumer based society.

Many people feel let down and get down on themselves because what they think they need doesn’t make them happy.

When we allow ourselves to fully experience life’s highs and lows,  it becomes clear that happiness doesn’t come from what we acquire or attain. It lies within us.

To find happiness we have to bring our attention into our inner world and let go of trying to control the outcomes of our life.

When we pause we transform.

If you disagree with me, ask yourself  “How often do I find time to pause and find a place of rest and peace?”

  1. You have no idea how much I needed to hear these soulful words today.
Your sentiments below are true. A consumer based society pulls us so far from where we need to be.

  3. Love this thought-provoking post Val. I struggle between letting go (having faith) and plotting my future (taking action). I think there must be a happy medium between the two. As you say we live in a consumer-based system. And letting go completely doesn’t put food on the table. Maybe one day I will go live off the grid somewhere and figure it all out. ❤

    1. You are right Diana – finding the balance between putting food on the table and allowing things to unfold isn’t easy. This is where following our passion and making sure we take time to let go along the way with sustain us until we are off the grid 🙂

Lovely reminder of the importance of stillness. Running and striving never allow us to fully experience the highs and lows, let alone appreciate when they have for us. I was an expert striver…I get it. Thank you for this, Val. 😉

  5. Forgive me, but I think that this post contradicts itself. I think it takes a huge amount of courage to go against the flow, to resist societal pressure and stand up against consumerism. I believe in our current society that ‘competing to win’ and ‘striving for success’ IS the norm, THAT is the flow of our modern society. That is what we are expected to do. It is that striving to be the best which has sucked us all down into the fast-paced world of today, of Do! Do! Do! And then we grab something fast to eat, rather than take time to prepare and enjoy meals with our own family the way it used to be done. And that too is part of consumerism, giving in to the trend of foods presented as EASILY available, rather than taking the time to buy what is best for us.’
It is a huge struggle to push against that tide and say ‘No! I am not going to do it! I am going to opt for a calmer life. I am not going to shop in a rush at the supermarket or pick up take-aways. I am going to indulge in slow-food cooking and eating. And I am going to take some time and find the inner me, the inner peace.’
I feel the exact opposite of what you say, one has to push against the tide to achieve those things. One has to go against the flow.

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. I can see your perspective ans agree! I meant to depict the flow as being the one of nature, our inner guide and true way of being that surpasses our society’s pressure. When we connect with this flow we create a different way of being – that gives us more awareness and choices.

I could sit still, in front of a fish tank, for hours.
    Lovely post!

    1. Take a moment now and come back into the present. Take a deep breath and on the exhale letting go of everything before now that might have brought up feelings of discomfort…. The peace is always there … We just need to remember to access it when we need to let go.
Hope that helps with the P word Jill!

  9. Perfect piece for me today and perfect image. I could stare at those fish for an hour. I’m wondering if another way to look at dead fish going with the flow, is that right now my heart rate is stunningly slow, watching that aquarium like image. Maybe those of us chilled out and relaxed can, in fact, go with the flow.

  10. “Only dead fish go with the flow” ?? That’s news to me. When I go with the flow of my personal stream (not the ones of others, as you pointed out) , then I breathe better, and feel more alive.

  11. Watery analogies: It seems ironic that in order to ‘go with the flow’ of life, we must ‘go against the stream’ of typified, conditioned and culturally accepted behavioural norms. The path of least resistance seems the hardest one for the modern Western mind to take?

      1. H.G. Wells said, “The path of least resistance is the path of the loser.” Many who buy into the antiquated Puritan Work Ethic agree with Wells. I do not.

When we follow our heart, we follow the path of least resistance. We enjoy what we do and do it joyously. Our enthusiasm spurs us forward and we accomplish more than when we take a more resistant path and “burn out” while beating our head against the brick walls we encounter.
