* That particular moment

I love this helpful reminder to pause today fromย Thich Nhat Hanh on Zen Flash.

ย When something upsets you, when something happens that is not to your liking in your family or your community, you want to change it right away. You are tempted to use the little power that is available to you, as a father, a mother, a teacher, somebody, to change the situation. This is exactly the moment to stop and contemplate. Practice looking deeply into the nature of what upsets you to see what the most mindful and compassionate response may be.

  1. This quote took my breath away.

    Thank you. So beautifully simple and so terrifyingly hard to do sometimes! Ahh the fear of letting go — of even a little bit of perceived power.

    Thanks Val. I am stunned by how this quote is resonating. And amazed I’d never read it before.

    Blessings on your day beautiful one.

  5. I had to stop and think about this for a moment. It is so natural for me to want to “fix” things, and especially to fix the pain in someone else. It is hard to accept that sometimes we cannot or should not as it may not be the most compassionate and caring solution.

My name is Val Boyko and I live outside of Philadelphia, USA. I’m originally from Scotland and hold dual citizenship. You can take the girl out of Scotland but you can’t take Scotland out of the girl!

This blog came to life one morning in 2013.  I woke up with these words in my mind:  “Life is a series of highs and lows. Be grateful for the highs. Be graceful in the lows. And find contentment in your Middle Ground.”

Find Your Middle Ground blog started to explore, reflect, ask deep questions, share insights about awakening, and connect with wonderful people like yourself. Thank you for being here and being such an inspiration.
