Living the Way a River Flows – or Not

Me too John. Me too.

When we are healthy and whole, our mind and body is able to adapt and adjust to what daily life brings.

However, sometimes things happen in our past that really shake us up and we feel we have little or no control. For people who have experienced trauma, the body and mind are forever alert, and often keep re-living the experience.

Trauma stays with us. Our bodies becomes sensitive to potential dangers and can be triggered into a fight, flight or freeze response. Our bodies are the holder of the memories that our minds cannot face.

For trauma survivors, the river is a downright scary and dangerous place and they need to find a way to have some control again. They are being blown off course and need help to stay feeling safe.

I am not a therapist, but as a life coach and yoga teacher, I work with some wonderful people who have experienced trauma in their lives. The key is to find their middle ground and center of being. For them, life really is like a pendulum moving from one extreme to an other. Learning to slow down and breathe, pause and reflect, is a powerful and empowering practice.

In nature there is a natural rhythm where everything pulses with energy.

We forget that we are a part of nature, not apart from it.

Take time to notice the ever present ebb and flow of the heart, breath, digestion, sleep and waking, wounding and healing, birth and death.

Everything comes and goes in the never-ending flow within all of us.

This reminds me of a favorite quote from Rumi:

“Your hand opens and closes, opens and closes. If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralysed. Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding, the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds’ wings.”

Let go of holding and go with nature’s flow.

* Everything is Neutral

The world we live in is one of energy and elements.

In this world everything is neutral.

It is our thinking that creates the idea of good and bad.

quote from William Shakespeare

Our thinking creates distinctions such as  “me” “us” and ‘them”. Our thinking creates attachment to things that give us pleasure and aversion to things that bring discomfort and fear.

We have such an amazing capacity in our minds to filter out things and to imagine others.

As human beings we create our own reality.

We make judgments about what is good and bad, right and wrong.

… Take away the thinking mind and everything becomes neutral.

So let go.

Come into the present moment.

And tune into the natural flow of life.

There will always be highs and lows in life because of how our thinking perceives the world.

Our role is to go with the flow, acknowledge the reality that we are creating and be open to something more than our thinking.

When we let go of our thinking and witness the neutrality, we become open to experience a sense of connection, love and peace that is beyond what we have known before.
