Life is difficult

But it isn’t a problem

Find your Middle Ground

~

These words came to me as I read responses to an earlier post about going through a difficult time.

One of the things I have learned from inner reflection and yoga, is, that life gets difficult. Life is made up of highs and lows. The problem arises when we get attached to the highs and resist the lows. We want everything to go our way.

We forget that there is nothing wrong with the lows. There may be difficulty and some pain, but it isn’t a problem to be fixed or to be made to go away.

It’s the way life is. Most of us are never taught about how to handle the tough, anxious and scary things that happen. We learn from those around us. Take a moment to reflect on how your parents and care givers dealt with tough times and stress…

It’s a very human response to want to move away from discomfort and pain, and to grasp the next feel good moment. But there is something here that wants to get our attention. Something worthwhile to learn about ourselves and the world around us.

When we recognize that life isn’t a problem to be fixed, we open a door. This door leads to accepting life as it unfolds, allowing and then embracing all that comes along. It’s also okay to recognize that this might not be the time or we are not ready to cross the threshold, but it is always there when we are ready to explore and go deeper … to Find our Middle Ground

  2. I love this perspective. The practice of yoga gives us the ability to stay present to how we perceive and also difficulties do not become obstacles. We find a way.

  4. What a wise perspective, Val. I must be careful even of my language and terms. I wonder how often I present a life issue as a problem to be solved. Much to think about here, so thank you.

      • “This door leads to accepting life as it unfolds, allowing and then embracing all that comes along.” ~> this is the sentence that resonated most with me.

During the pandemic, I have practiced the art of “alert curiosity” with respect to “what’s next?” As a result, I have “felt” much less resistance, fear, sadness, etc.

  8. Tara Brach has a saying, ‘This too belongs’ and if we all understood the wisdom and the understanding we gather in these difficult spaces, we would be more accommodating when it arrives. Great post Val 🌈🙏🏻💕

    • Thank you Karen for your wisdom and Tara’s 💝. I’ve been attending her zoom meditation/ sangha gatherings on Saturdays. It’s so grounding to meditate and then hear her responses to questions and sharing unconditional love.

  9. Powerful words, dear Val, and challenging ones, too. It takes courage and immense presence of mind, perhaps to some extent the capacity of intellect (or rather, wise reflection) to override feeling initially — I don’t know if you would agree with this last point?

    • So good to hear from you Hariod. I hope you are well 🙏
Your question makes me pause… as always. Pondering if it is immense presence of mind or reconditioning over many years of reframing practice. A bit like stubbing your toe and becoming numb to it…. just before gangrene sets in.
      I’ve missed you 💛

  14. Awesome words! This approach to life has been introduced to me during the Covid pandemic. As Eckart Tolle says, “if you only live for the highs in life, just wait.” The middle ground is a great way to live especially in these turbulent times we face. 😊👍🏼🙏🏻💗

  17. I love this post, Val. I did look back and I see how I was taught. And it has taken me so many years to retrain my brain…to respond to life instead of reacting. I love your thoughts…I love the middle ground. Life is full of all things and the key is to be happy, satisfied, powerful…in all situations. I have a friend who just this week found a lump in her breast…and she already beat breast cancer. Her attitude is incredible…she said that whatever it is she will deal with it and she is not worried. May we all have the inner faith to just deal with whatever comes our way…and to be comfortable doing it!
    Happy Easter, Val!
