As I sit with the sadness and the grief of losing both of our girl Welsh Terriers – Dilys and now Meg,  I allow myself to feel the pain and loss. This has been a summer season of worry, stress and heartbreak. Now there is space for peace.

The words of Kahlil Gibran come to mind.

“Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.

Just as the stone of the fruit must break, so that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

And if you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy.

If you accept the seasons of your heart, as you have always accepted the four seasons, you would watch with serenity the winters of your grief.

Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.

Therefore, trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility.

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen.”

  3. So sorry for the loss of your dear pets. Our beloved pets bring so much joy and love and their loss – so much pain. Wishing you strength until you can, once again, think of them without the pain.

    • Thank you Pat 🙏 The memories make me smile and open my heart. The pain comes from so much love … and I wouldn’t want to deny it. Grieving is a process … and the heart knows it ,,, despite the mind struggling 💝

  8. Sending you a big virtual hug Val. May you nurture your beautiful heart and know you are surrounded in love.

‘To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.’

    • Thank you dear Karen… for the love and support. 💕🙏💕 So hard when we need to tend to ourselves while others are in so much pain and judgement about what they should, could and might have done differently. It’s so real for them .. the struggle and thinking taking over. May tomorrow bring some insight and release.

  12. Much love and light to you dear Val, it may be an unseen hand and with great love…but it still hurts that beating heart very much. Big hugs my friend, may that love gained from them both always keep your heart wagging with that love too ❤️ 🙏🏼 🦋

  17. I’m so sorry, Val. Losing pets is so difficult and the empty space never seems to heal over completely. Grief from loss is the toughest of emotions to move through but we must. Most of us know it’s not “just a dog”. They are part of your family. You are allowed to grieve for them fully.

  22. This kind of loss and grief does not blow away quickly. Beautiful piece of reflection here. The seasons of our heart, mirrored with Nature’s seasons, helps in the grief. Our Golden died 7 years ago, yet we still feel his energy nearby. May you do the same with your Dilys and Meg.

  27. Very sorry to hear of you losing your pets ~ it never ceases to amaze me how much they touch our lives with their unconditional love and loyalty, nor the amount of pain felt when they pass on. Beautifully written and heartfelt post, wishing you the best in this difficult year.

    • Thank you Randall for your kind words. 🙏 We are getting into a new routine routine with only one dog. It feels quite Zen compared with three. With loss comes change.
