Searching Like a Cod

When the innumerable searches are concluded,
The realization dawns that
The optimal place to be is
Where one already is.

It is an arrival at the place
Where there is no solid footing beneath,
The understanding of all things.

Until the conclusion,
The searcher is like
A cod asking directions to the ocean

~ Wu Hsin from “The Lost Writings” translated by Roy Melvyn

Wu Hsin’s insights into spirituality and Oneness always bring a smile.

It isn’t easy learning to go with the flow, until we stop asking for directions, and find the courage to be with no solid footing.

  1. Oh, that touches a spot. For Jeannie and I were having a wobbly moment thinking about what happens when we can’t look after this house, the animals and the acres. Recognizing the growing uncertainty as months and years go by.

The courage to accept no solid footing! That is quite an idea to embrace. Thanks Val.

Val Boyko posted this on her blog and I love it. It’s a beautiful reminder that “the optimal place to be is where one already is”. If we are mindful we can seek out the little things that we already have and explore any discomfort we feel, finding “the courage to be with no solid footing.”

  3. I wish I’d understood this in my youth. I was always on the run, embracing change, new starts in new places, thinking there was the perfect location out there for us somewhere yet to be discovered. The real contentment came when I realized the only special place was the one in which we currently found ourselves. No matter where that was. Thanks, Val.

This is a wonderful reminder that going with the flow is the better, less painful option and usually get us where we need to go. And that is often right where we are.
