stuck in the past

“Nothing ever happened in the past that can prevent you from being present now.”

~ Eckhart Tolle

Such a powerful statement.

The mind often gets caught up in the past so much that we are filled with feelings such as regret, anger or shame about what has happened. We may feel stuck, or unable to get over the event.

When this happens it starts to color how we see the world. We start filtering how we interpret the world around us based on those feelings about the past. We identify so much with what has happened to us, that we cannot separate ourselves from the event.

We tell ourselves that its the event that keeps us from being happy. Yet unhappiness comes from our inability to come fully into the present.

Holding on to those thoughts about the past, prevents us from fully appreciating the present moment.

The first step to letting go, is awareness that something needs to be let go of and released. Sometimes we may not even realize exactly what it is, but we sense that we are holding on to something.

The second step is to bring our attention gently into the present moment by focusing on our breath and becoming an observer. To help you become present, please follow this link.

When we find a state of presence and inner balance, we can let go.

  2. This hits the nail on the head. However some times no matter how hard we try there are some that will never let go and they take it to the grave with them along with the joy and happiness that is stifled within them. Well done. :o)

  6. Nice post…
The Past carries alot (joy, Fear, Hate, pain, love, Good, Bad etc)… We should let go of those that wouldn’t make our now(present) great

  12. This can be one of the most difficult concepts to teach parents or people who have faced the death of a child or a loved one. They find it so hard to let go of the life they once had. I remind them to be patient as let go slowly, and with time, healing will take place. Your post speaks the truth Val and it is definitely a practice each day to stay present.

  13. This way is the only way to a life in freedom, no matter how bad the past ever was, Val. To live in the past just keep us in pains, which we really don’t need.
Thank you for this post, Val ❤

  15. trying, trying
    to let go,
    but it’s really
    gotta hold on me 🙂

  16. I haven’t read all the other wonderful replies to your post, Val, but I did see the one from ‘smilecalm’. The barrier to many of us ( and I include me in that group) about letting go is that the past really can “gotta hold on me”. Having the ability to let go of a past experience ‘controlling’ us is dependent, critically so, on us understanding the nature of that hold.

When that past ‘hold’ is significant then that understanding may not be achieved without some outside help.

I only mention this because there may be people reading your post who try so very hard not to let their past control them and end up feeling even more despondent when they can’t break free. In my own case it was 51 years after a certain past event before a psychotherapist revealed the subconscious emotional barrier that had been affecting me, both positively and negatively, for all those years.

Big hugs to you and all your readers!

  17. Some past events are harder to let go of than others, and at times it is not the bad or sad events that hardest, it is the happy events that we no longer have. This can be due to losing someone, children growing up, coping with reduced income, or a change in lifestyle, or perhaps coping with an illness or disability (and needing to ‘let go’ of the able body once owned) … even getting older and letting go of the vitality of youth. These are all difficult … yet achievable if one embraces who we are and where we are and what we have in this very moment, on this very day.

  18. Thank you for your wise words Elizabeth. Letting go of the good times as well as coming to terms with challenges brings perspective and wisdom.
It’s how we deal with our thinking about past events that can break us free of them. 💛

Thank you so much Val! I was able to read your comment in my notifications but am not sure why it doesn’t appear on the post — I’ll try to sort that out!
You’re so right about it only being a problem in the mind. You’ve also made me think now would be a good time to get back into doing some yoga! And thanks for your encouragement about the move 😊💕
